As I struggle with figuring out what it means to be a part of the Church, I am given some direction by surprising statistics.

There are 77 million Anglicans worldwide. 40 million (!!!) are African.

That's right.

Oh man, it would be awesome to be part of a church centered in Africa. (Geographically speaking, of course.)

So I took these pictures on a train a long time ago.

I think I'd like to make a photo-essay out of them, maybe publish them as a PDF.

I remember C.S. Lewis talking in Mere Christianity about all of us being on different trains (it's somewhere near the end and I don't feel like moving over to my bookshelf at the moment.) I think it may have inspired this essay at the Trinity Foundation: A Trainwreck in Slow Motion

Sufjan Stevens

Sufjan Stevens and the Illinoisemakers played a great set last night at Pearl Street. The music was top notch and the cheerleading stunts were probably the most literary variations on the genre ever written. I was especially pleased when the whole band came back to play an encore and "All the Trees of the Field Shall Clap Their Hands" was the song. That title comes from Isa. 55:12, "the hills shall break forth before you into singing; and all the trees of the fields shall clap their hands." (here is an interesting blog that discusses the metaphors employed in the biblical text.) And here, for your enjoyment, are the lyrics to the song:

If I am alive this time next year,
will I have arrived in time to share?
And mine is about as good this far.
And I'm still applied to what you are.
And I am joining all my thoughts to you.
And I'm preparing every part for you.

And I heard from the trees a great parade.
And I heard from the hills a band was made.
And will I be invited to the sound?
And will I be a part of what you've made?
And I am throwing all my thoughts away.
And I'm destroying every bet I've made.
And I am joining all my thoughts to you.
And I'm preparing every part for you

Man, I am thankful that this guy exists and that God gave him the talent that He has.
